Heuer Autavia GMT: the story of the first owner

In the summer of 2019 this GMT was offered to me by a very friendly, first owner from Canada. I was very fortunate to buy his watch and to get a nice story of him and his Heuer as an extra! This his story: '

In 1971 I purchased a Heuer Chronometer with bezel from a Swiss jeweller I knew well. I was diving in the Bahamas and flying my plane to and from the Islands. I had National Geographic divers who sometimes had to be hauled back from excess depths immediately after I had landed and went straight to leading a 100 foot dive. The watch was invaluable. It sat unused in a drawer since 1975 or so. In 2019 I came across it. Shook it a bit as it is an automatic. lt began running and kept perfect time. I recall when the bezel was replaced back in the 1970's it was neither difficult nor particularly expensive. If I recall correctly the only issue was that it was a slightly different model than the original, but still served its purpose for my uses. The letters wore off because the bezel had to be turned frequently for timing turns and dives often underwater, wearing tough dive gloves. The watch was not for appearance or collecting. It was for piloting between countries and islands' diving, often in three times a day in which I had sometimes flown as well. So moving between time zones frequently. Dive time is critical and my time at 10,000 above sea level had to be included in the Narcosis prevention plotting. By the way, did I mention that I flew the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Lynden Pindling, in my plane numerous times; as well as the Deputy P.M., A.D. Hanna.  In addition I used my plane as back-up for Out Island Airways at the direct request of the Minister of Transport of the Bahamas, Darryl Rolle, getting stuck tourists off the Islands after Christmas when scheduled flights were overbooked.'

About the Heuer Autavia GMT

This is the Heuer Autavia GMT, the mark II, equipped with a cal 14 movement by Heuer. It’s a unique watch with its distinctive ‘red needles’ and an orange second hand, pointy GMT-hand and a 24-hour bezel with only even numbers and no tritium pearl, produced for only half a year. The bezel on this watch was replaced by the first owner and in 2020 replaced by an original ‘no dot’ bezel (thanks to Bernard de Vos).

The heuer 741-1 and its proud new owner

Most people know Heuer for famous models like the Carrera and Autavia. But every now and then we bump into a lesser known model like this 741-1. I loved it instantly. Its an adorable little model with a stunning blue colored dial.

When I bought it, it was rougher than rough. I decided to restore it, by not only a full revision but also new chrome layer. But it stayed controversial; even Heuer experts were doubting if it was a real Heuer... So I went to Tag Heuer in La Chaux de Fonds to ask. And yes, its genuine. While I was waiting in the TH Board Room, a guy from the team went to the Heuer safe. And after a while, there it was; the Heuer 741-1!

For years I was wearing it. Then a very enthusiastic Heuer collector Eddie contacted me and mananged to convince me I had to sell it to him. He told me he is on a journey, finding out all about Heuer. I recognized that as I did the same years ago. After chatting with him, I decided that the 741-1 is at the right place in his collection. And although I have to admit that I miss it, its great to see Eddie's story about this genuine, lovely little Heuer.
